Three Ways to Promote Your Non-GMO Products
There is greater consumer awareness of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) in our food and it needs to continue. This awareness was recently increased in an episode of Dr. Oz addressing the subject and exploring the potential health and safety issues.
While GMOs are restricted or banned in 30 countries, sixty-eight (68%) percent of the genetically engineered acreage is located here in the United States.(1)
GMOs can be found in almost every product humans and animals consume. From our breakfast cereal, fruits and vegetables to our lunchtime bowl of soup to our afternoon snack whether a chocolate or energy bar to our evening meal of pasta and sauce. Pet food products and baby formulas can contain GMOs through grains and feeds. Even meats and fish can contain some genetically modified organisms.
If you are a food producer or retailer promoting the non-gmo products you sell is increasingly important.
Three Ways to Promote Your Non-GMO Products
1. Utilize the existing Seal Program call "Non-GMO Project Verified". While this does not guarantee a product is 100% percent GMO free is does require a process for testing and best practices and gives the consumer some assurance.
2. Consumer Education and Information - Utilize existing information such as the downloadable Education Presentation Kits at Sustainable Table. Post information and links on your website, flyers, point-of-sale and other interfaces.
3. Tap into QR codes sending the customer to nutritional and health related information about the specific product they are considering purchasing or consuming.
Don't assume your customers have recent reports and studies of the effects of genetically engineered foods and crops or that they know your product is GMO free. Tell them and tell them again.
